We will start our route next to the visitor center of the archaeological site. There, our expert guides will welcome you to begin the tour, which will include an introduction, followed by taking the shuttle to reach the archaeological site. Medina Azahara was a city created in the 10th century as a residence for the royal family, important ministers, and high officials.
Currently, it is one of the largest archaeological sites in Europe, preserving part of the layout of the fortress, gateways, and foundations of significant buildings. We will describe the protocol followed by ambassadors who wanted to meet with the caliph, as well as curiosities and anecdotes from those lavish encounters.
Its destruction in the early 11th century due to internal divisions among Muslims, followed by looting and abandonment, caused its trace to be lost for centuries until, in the late 19th century, prominent intellectuals of the time fought to recover it. Since then, except for the years of the civil war, Medina Azahara has been rising from its ashes, currently continuing with several ongoing research projects and excavations, which we will detail during our tour.
