Our tour begins at the Altagracia museum where we will admire the unique and precious pieces that make up its collection.
Then we will continue to the Basilica of Higüey. Devotees from all corners of the country flock to this impressive sanctuary. The largest religious monument in the Dominican Republic, it covers an area of 4,680 m2. A distinctive structure in the shape of a Latin cross; a masterpiece of French architects. Visitors are led through a somber bronze entrance plated in 24 kt. gold. On his second visit to the country, Pope John Paul II crowned an image of the Virgin of Altagracia, a remarkable silver-gilt diadem.
A tall bell tower guarding 45 bronze carillons are pleasant visual stimuli for passersby, enveloping them in a heavenly aura. Regardless of your religious beliefs, this sacred place radiates a sense of peace and tranquility. This part of the tour takes us through the main street, with its many monuments, restaurants and street vendors.
A mélange of color, culture and flavor. Contrasting architectural styles, representing a dilapidated fire station, an old City Hall to the office of the current Dominican Postal System. La Cruz del Perdón is located in an area of the park adjacent to the church, where the customs of the higüeyanos are deeply rooted. The sanctuary keeps invaluable jewels, a novelty piece for the indiscreet looks of those who visit it. There is a beautiful silver frame with the image of the Virgin of Altagracia, enhanced by inlaid precious stones, highlighted by an eloquent emerald bordered by crystals owned by San Pío X.
Next, in our itinerary, we will disperse in the vicinity of the Higüey Market. Get caught up in the beliefs and customs of its people, learn how master craftsmen make cigars by hand. During this tour, you can also buy the best Dominican rum and visit quaint kiosks displaying the most distinctive and elegant samples of local handicrafts and costume jewelry.
