You are about to get to know the capital of Menorca, but it's not all about beautiful coves and delicious gastronomy! Now it's time for a bit of culture with this free tour of Mahón.
Did you know that fantastic legends run through the streets of Mahón? Or that among its mansions there are still ghosts of old merchants and corsairs? These ghosts remind us that the city was sacked by Barbarossa himself in the 16th century.
It is worth mentioning that during the 18th century Menorca was under British rule for more than seventy years.
We want to explore with you the vestiges of the British footprint in the city and do some sightseeing in Mahón!
We will start our visit in the Plaça de s'Esplanada to discover some of the most important buildings of the time: Els Quarters, built to prevent the troops from staying in private homes.
We will visit the Town Hall, from the 17th century, but renovated in 1789 in a Frenchified baroque style. Did you know that the clock tower was imported from England around 1731?
We will also visit the Principal de la Guardia, used as a barracks for the guards during the British domination. And, of course, the Governor's Palace, where Governor Richard Kane settled when in 1722 he decided to move the capital of the island from Ciudadela to Mahón.
We will walk through its streets and squares, we will know the Quintana Gran, the old market, Plaça Vella or Hannover Street. We will also show you how the British presence can still be seen today in many of the details of its architecture, with elements such as sash windows or in the so-called boínders (balconies closed with glass that, precisely, take their name from the English bow window).
Did you know that incorporating the color red to the facades as a decorative element is a common feature in civil buildings, which has been called English colonial architecture?
Dare to do this activity in Mahón, where the British atmosphere is still breathed in every corner!
And above all, don't forget to try the Xoriguer Gin, a gin produced in Mahón since the 18th century. Some Mahonese artisans decided to start making it because sailors and soldiers could not find gin in the island's bars.
