The Olympic Port has become Barcelona's main marina and is home to one of the most recognized works of art in the city, Frank Gehry's "Peix d'or", next to the Casino de Barcelona.
It was inaugurated in 1991 at the southern end of the Poblenou neighborhood, in the area most transformed by the urban renewal program for the Olympics, and today houses the city's busiest restaurants and nightlife venues.
The area around the Olympic Port was transformed to accommodate the athletes in the 'Villa Olímpica del Poblenou' and parks such as the 'Parc de Mar' were created. In addition, on both sides of the port the beaches were improved to become the most popular in Barcelona: to the south the beach of 'La Barceloneta' and to the north the 'Platja de la Nova Icària '.
In contrast to the central theme of the visit to the Olympic Port, the second part of this visit to the city of Barcelona takes us to the Ciutadella Park, which offers numerous places of historical interest whose history dates back to the late Middle Ages.
Parc de la Ciutadella is named after a citadel that, built in the early 18th century, was the largest fortress in Europe at the time.
The citadel was finally demolished at the end of the 19th century. However, three architectural remains still exist: the arsenal, now the Parliament of Catalonia, the church, and the former Governor's Palace.
