But it also has a lot to offer for those seeking history, art, culture, tradition, and for food enthusiasts. What to see in Málaga? Here we give you our recommendations for 5 things in Málaga you can’t miss.
The Alcazaba of Málaga.
In the center of Málaga, at the foot of Gibralfaro hill, you can appreciate one of the most important historical monuments in this city. It was built by the Hammudid dynasty in the early 11th century. In 1487, it was captured by the Christian troops of the Catholic Monarchs. In fact, today it is the best-preserved Arab palace-fortress in Spain.
During your visit to the fortress, you can stroll through the palace gardens while appreciating the strongholds and gates that the Arabs built using ancient Roman columns. You will likely feel like you are traveling back in time.
The Roman Theatre of Málaga.
This historical monument is undoubtedly one of the great wonders of the city. Located right next to the Alcazaba of Málaga, amidst bars and terraces, you come across this monument of incalculable historical value.
Under the rule of Augustus, the Roman Theatre of Málaga was built in the 1st century, showcasing the traditional architecture of Roman theaters from that era.
In 1951, its structure was rediscovered, and recently a visitor center was inaugurated where some findings, such as amphorae and everyday tools from that period, are displayed.
Viewpoint of Gibralfaro Castle
Its origins date back to Phoenician times, but it was the Arabs who built the fortress in the 10th century. Later, in the 14th century, it was transformed into an Alcazaba.
As of today, the castle has been mostly restored and features a military museum. Furthermore, due to its location at the top of Gibralfaro hill, one can enjoy one of the best panoramic views of Málaga.
Port of Málaga
Located just a few minutes from the city center, the Port of Málaga has become one of the most important cruise ports in Spain. Additionally, it boasts the most modern maritime terminals in the country.
With a wide variety of shops and restaurants surrounding the area, it’s an idyllic spot for a leisurely stroll and to enjoy a drink on its terraces while breathing in the fresh sea air.
The Caminito del Rey
The Caminito del Rey is located about 60 kilometers from the center of Málaga, between Ronda and Antequera, in a territory filled with historical treasures and magnificent landscapes. It’s not a strenuous task, as its difficulty level is moderate to low, making it a popular choice for those looking for a not very demanding stroll. The estimated time to complete the entire route at 100% is about 3 to 4 hours. On average, the temperature is around 15-16 degrees Celsius, but the most recommended months for the excursion are April and May.
