The existence of the stepped pyramids in Güímar began to gain attention in the early 1990s. The information reached the hands of the prestigious anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl. This researcher, who dedicated a large part of his life to studying the cultural origins of ancient civilizations worldwide, carefully examined the structures in Güímar.
There are several theories about the origin and age of the pyramids. Some researchers propose that they are stone mounds, called "majanos," built by farmers to clear the land for cultivation. On the other hand, Heyerdahl related the existence of the pyramids to ancient civilizations, arguing that the construction details of the pyramids resemble the architectural principles used in the Old and New World, and therefore, they could not be the result of a mere accumulation of stones. Various investigations demonstrate that the pyramids are astronomically aligned with the summer and winter solstices.
Later, another theory was proposed, linking the pyramids to the owner of the land where they are located in the mid-19th century, Mr. Antonio Díaz-Flores. The land purchase documents from 1854 make no mention of the stepped structures, while the will drafted by Díaz-Flores in 1872 does mention these structures. This would narrow down the construction date to a brief period of two decades, which coincides with the dating of the artifacts found in the first excavation campaign carried out in the area. If this theory is true, it would not diminish the cultural value of the pyramids but would consecrate them as an ethnographic element, a testament to the knowledge and activities of the Canarian people in the 19th century, thus maintaining the need for their conservation.
In 2017, the Pyramids of Güímar obtained the prestigious designation of Botanical Garden, unanimously granted by the Ibero-Macaronesian Association of Botanical Gardens. This recognition is the result of many years of work: as an open-air museum, several outdoor routes have been created focusing on Canarian culture, history, botany, and nature, giving greater prominence to our botanical collection, which now forms an integral part of the exhibitions that can be discovered in over 20,000m2 of accessible garden areas.
