The Drach Caves are four impressive caves -formed in the interior of carbonate rocks, between 11 and 5.3 million years ago- that are located on the east coast of Majorca. Its interior could easily be confused with a SF film set, but it can easily be explained as a lifetime result of filtering rainwater dripping over limstone rocks which dissolve easily upon contact. This erosion process has resulted in the sculption of stalactites and stalagmites.
First writtings about the cave date back to the 14th century and by 1784, Cardinal Despuig included these caves in his map of Majorca although the first real exploration did not take place until de 19th century -by cartographer and speleologist M. F. Will and, years later, by E. A. Martel. During Martel's exploration he discovered new caves and a huge lake, actually one of the world’s largest underground lakes, measuring over 170 metres in length and between 4 and 12 metres in depth. In the lake, that currently takes his name, a fantastic music concert is held; which has been offered since 1935 and consists of pieces of classical music.
