As in most cities of the time, Palma had a Jewish quarter known as the Jewish quarter of Palma de Mallorca. These ghettos were fenced off and could only be accessed through gates that protected the interior.
Today, in Palma, there are elements that remind us of Palma's Jewish past. Would you like to see these elements and others that have disappeared in order to understand the Jewish quarter of Palma de Mallorca?
The Jewish quarters were protected by the king, since the Jews were considered his property. They did not pay taxes, but in exchange they had to render services to the king, such as serving him Greek wine, mending his clothes, borrowing money, etc.
The Jews were literate in at least two languages, Hebrew (because they read the Torah several times a day) and the local language (in this case Mallorcan).
